Homemade Play Dough

Simple play that supports littler learners

Developing fine motor skills is an important part of early childhood.

Play dough is a simple, low-cost activity you can make at home that helps strengthen little hands while sparking creativity.

At Little Blue Door, we know how important fine motor skills are for young children. These are the small movements that use the muscles in the hands and fingers, such as picking up tiny objects, holding a pencil or fastening buttons. Strong fine motor skills help little ones with everyday independence as well as preparing them for early writing.

One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways to build these skills is through play dough. Squishing, rolling, pinching and cutting dough all help to strengthen hand muscles, improve coordination and develop control. Even better, little ones can let their imaginations run free while they play.

Easy Homemade Play Dough Recipe

  • 2 cups plain flour

  • 1 cup salt

  • 1 tablespoon oil (any cooking oil is fine for this)

  • 1 cup water
  • A few drops of food colouring (optional)

Simply mix the ingredients together in a bowl until the dough is smooth. If it feels sticky, add a little more flour. Store in an airtight container and it will last for weeks.

You can also add natural scents like cinnamon or lavender, or mix in glitter for extra sensory fun.

Play dough is more than just play: it is a wonderful way to support learning, independence and creativity at home.
