May, June and July offer the perfect time to get little hands into the soil and start planting!
These two months offer ideal conditions for growing some of our favourite summer crops – sunflowers, strawberries, and raspberries. Not only do they brighten up the garden, but they also provide an exciting hands-on learning experience for children.
Sunflowers: Tall, Bright, and Fun to Grow!
Sunflowers are always a hit with children. They grow quickly, providing a sense of accomplishment, and they’re a brilliant way to teach little ones about the magic of nature. Plant sunflower seeds in May or June, and by summer, they’ll be towering and full of bright blooms. Watch as your little ones proudly show off their towering flowers you could even have a family competition!
Strawberries: Sweet, Juicy, and Ready to Pick!
Whether you’re planting in the ground, hanging baskets or in pots, strawberries are easy for children to care for and even easier to enjoy when it’s time for harvest. The thrill of picking their own fresh strawberries is something every child will cherish – not to mention how delicious they are!
Raspberries: Tangy, Tasty, and Great for Picking!
Raspberries can also be planted in late spring. They take a little longer to bear fruit, but by late summer, your little ones will be picking sweet, juicy raspberries straight from the garden. It’s a lovely way to introduce little ones to the concept of patience while nurturing something they’ll enjoy later.
You can pick up seedlings or young plants at your local nurseries or garden centre making it easier to pop these straight into the ground!
Get your gardening gloves on, and let’s make the most of these sunny months! Gardening with children is a fantastic way to introduce them to the wonders of nature, all while creating lasting memories.
So, whether you're planting seeds for tall sunflowers or tasty strawberries, now is the time to start!
