Preparing for Colder Days: Outdoor Play in All Weathers

Why fresh air and outdoor learning matter all year round

Outdoor play remains a vital part of early years development, even during the colder months, little ones can continue to enjoy the many benefits of being outdoors.

As temperatures drop, it’s natural to wonder whether outdoor play is still suitable. At Little Blue Door, we believe that outdoor play is important in all weathers and plays a key role in supporting little one’s wellbeing and development throughout the year.

Fresh air and outdoor movement help boost physical health, improve mood and support better sleep. Being outside also gives little ones the chance to explore nature as it changes, from crunchy autumn leaves to frosty mornings and frozen puddles, encouraging curiosity and sensory learning. Regular outdoor play helps little ones develop resilience, confidence and independence as they learn to adapt to different environments and conditions.

Keeping little ones warm and comfortable is key. Dressing in layers allows little ones to stay cosy while still being able to move freely. A warm base layer, jumper or fleece, waterproof coat and trousers are ideal for colder days. Wellies or waterproof shoes keep feet dry, while hats and gloves help protect against the cold.

Our aim is to ensure children enjoy the outdoors whatever the weather. With the right clothing and a positive approach, outdoor play becomes a joyful and valuable experience all year round – helping children grow, explore and thrive.
