The Magic of Music: How Songs and Sounds Support Early Years Development

Exploring the vital role of music in helping our little learners grow, learn and express themselves.

Music is more than just fun and games. It plays a key part in supporting children’s social, emotional and cognitive development from the earliest years.

At our nursery, music is a key part of learning and play. Whether it’s singing a familiar rhyme, shaking a tambourine or simply moving to a beat, music helps children grow in all kinds of wonderful ways.

Music boosts language development by encouraging children to listen, repeat and experiment with sounds. Songs and rhymes help build vocabulary, improve memory and support clear speech. Even before they talk, babies respond to rhythm and tone, laying the foundation for future communication skills.

It also supports emotional expression. Music helps our little ones make sense of their feelings and learn to self-regulate. A calm lullaby can soothe, while an upbeat song can lift spirits and bring energy to group activities.

Music encourages social interaction. Children learn to take turns, listen to others and join in shared actions. Musical play often builds confidence too.

We saw all of this come to life during our Music Festival Day this July. Our little learners had a fantastic time performing, dancing and exploring instruments. It was a joyful celebration that reminded us just how powerful music can be in early development.

At our nursery, we believe every child is musical in their own way. Whether they’re humming along or jumping to the beat, we see music as a joyful path to learning and connection.
