Maths for little ones doesn’t need to be formal, it can be fun!
Everyday play offers countless opportunities to build early maths skills naturally through counting, sorting, shapes, and problem-solving.
At Little Blue Door, maths is woven into everyday activities to help little ones learn in a fun and engaging way. Simple moments such as counting blocks while building a tower, singing number rhymes, or sorting toys by colour and size all support early mathematical skills and knowledge.
There are plenty of ways to bring maths into every day play and routines at home too. Snack time can become a learning opportunity. Little ones can count pieces of fruit, compare sizes, or talk about who has “more” or “less”. Outdoor play encourages maths too, whether little ones are measuring with buckets in the sandpit, spotting shapes in nature, or counting how many jumps they can do. Encouraging little ones to make comparisons and predictions using every day objects, lining up teddies or predicting who would win a race all help build mathematical thinking.
Puzzles, stacking cups, and shape sorters help little ones begin to recognise patterns and understand problem-solving skills. Most importantly, learning through play helps build confidence and curiosity in a relaxed environment.
By making maths part of everyday experiences, little ones develop important early skills while having fun, exploring, and learning naturally through play.
